I first met Nick in September 1966 on a train travelling from Sussex to London. We got talking and it turned out he had just interviewed one of my closest university friends for a job in Bristol - yes that was Sue getting her first graduate job at Service 9! Despite geographical distance, our families interracted over the years, and when I told our son Sam the sad news of Nick's death, he remembered a visit by the Nightingales to our home in Hampshire in the early 1980s. Sam was just getting into running and was very impressed that Nick appeared to have his name on the back of his running shoes (early Nikes!).
